I like the Murach Book on ASP.net. Well written and easy to follow.

There is also a VB version available.

Recently, one of my clients requested an internet site where hist customers could access some important documents that my client tracks. I've managed to build a small ASP.NET application by brute force - by sifting through the online documentation and "help" that comes with my MSDN subscription.
