I think what I mean to say is that here in the UK we believe we have free speech and freedom of press without censorship. In actuality our censorship seems mild when WE compare it to the censorship carried out in other nations.

What most Brits don't realise is just how much we are controlled by the media - from the press to TV adverts we are led like sheep. One of the many things we are led to believe is that we have certain basic freedoms.

The difficulty to my mind is this: If everyone were free to do everything they wanted then there would be anarchy. If everyone were prohibited from doing everything they wanted to do then we would be prisoners/slaves. Each of our nation's governments try to balance between these two extremes.

On the point of censorship. Most UK based internet hosts have terms and conditions that prohibit certain sites from being posted. Many forms of pornography and many forms of hatred (either religious or aimed at individuals) are blocked. This censorship is derived from a base level of "decency" that I believe is based on whether or not actual harm could come to the targets of those sites.

Therefore an Anti-Islam, Anti-Semitic- or Anti-Christian site would likely be removed by the host - whereas a satirical site showing comic images of Jesus trying to catch a marble (a common UK jesus based joke) may be allowed. Therefore the media - especially the web - is censored more by organisations than by the government.

Last year there was a "Book of Sick Jokes" published in the UK. There is a website that these jokes were collected from and believe me they are not for the faint hearted. The site http://www.sickipedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page . When the book was published the only level of censorship taken in the UK was to wrap it in plastic so it could not be read in the bookshop. That site may be a good example of what you have been asking for elsewhere Metin, if you search the site for "Jesus" you may find the exampels you have been asking for.

As for YouTube, I believe that Google will most likely remove the offending video and Turkey will be able to release access to the site once more. I think the reaction here has been driven by the shock at our Turkish friends not beinmg able to see a firendly Football related video because of the blanket ban on YouTube - the ban does seem an extreme measure to those of us who think we have a right to freedom of information.
