I am old enough to remember the early protection schemes like ProLok which would only allow even legitimate, registered users to run the setup program a certain number of times. (3?) Installing bumped the count up by 1, uninstalling bumped it back down by 1. If you got a new computer you had to uninstall the program on the old computer first. Fortunately enough users complained that such programs went away. Microcomputers were still an evolving industry. Heck, I remember buying Microsoft Word when it was about the #6 player among a couple dozen word processing contenders. Buying Microsoft C when it was in a similar position. Lattice C, anyone? Marc Williams C? MultiMate? XyWrite? It was an exciting time. Now that kind of excitement is only found on the internet. The PC industry was consolidated, if not necessarily ossified, years ago.
