The California DMV may revoke your driver's license if you receive:

Four points within a 12-month period
Six points in a 24-month period
Eight points in a 36-month period

A friend of mine received 5 points for one incident - speeding.

I saw a Chevrolet Corvette on Interstate 5 from Los Angeles to San Francisco driving fast. I passed him five times by the time I got close to San Francisco. Each time I passed him there was a Hiway Patrol officer with flashing lights behind him at the side of the road. How many points did this guy get that day? Not real in my book.

>Usually 10% plus 2 mph over here is the cut off for prosecution. Average speeding (ie not dangerous driving) gets you three points on your license . If you get 12 points (so 4 speeding tickets) you get banned from driving for 6 months to one year. Also we have elapsed time cameras that record your entry time into an area and your exit time then work out your average speed. If its over the limit you get a ticket. These are often used on motorways where roadworks are going on and there is a temporary limit.

>>The traffic is typically at exactly 5 miles over the speed limit around here. I think everyone knows that you won't get stopped here for driving at that speed so it is what everyone does. Sometimes in the afernoon there will be a few going over that, but we have so many unmarked cars in this area that there is always one or two pulled over that you pass. What is tricky now is NC has a law that you MUST pull over to the left lane when you pass a cop which is on the side of the road and if there is not a left lane then you you have to slow wayyyyyyyyy down. Traffic will jam up really quickly in those spots!

>>>That's a safe approach.

>>>Same here, actually. I don't drive enough above the speed limit to be vulnerable and drive a notch below that when the girls are in the car. 5 miles over is my norm. I got a bunch of speeding tickets while in my 20s and driving nothing but sports cars. Trans Am, Corvette, Corvette -- you do the math <g>. I haven't had a moving violation in 20 years. Getting boring, aren't I?

>>>>I am a firm believer that the safest way to get there is to go the same speed as the rest of the flow. If traffic is moving along at 45mph - I go 45mph. If traffic is moving along at 80, I go 80 :o)

It is such a breeze. 30 minutes to work, but that's because I have to get off I-85 after just 10-25 minutes and drive through town. Now, I could take I-40 to get there too, but I-40 here is a nightmare!!!

>>>>>>>Amen to that, brother!! From Burlington to the I40/85 split, it is like the NC verson of the AutoBahn. I do about 73 in the 65, and I get passed by about everyone!
