I just can't get past my initial reaction: Oh My God.Sorry if my presentation was somewhat abrupt. Those parents were shocked. Actually there was some semi-serious joking about the old Victorian habit of sending teenage girls to Finishing Schools deep in the Swiss Alps. ;-)
As somebody else pointed out, "conservative" and "liberal" are just labels: nobody has a monopoly on being decent and even if society disagrees in 20 years with the standards we try to uphold in 2007, that does not make us bad people.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
