Automated tickets are very common here now. A lot of people don't like them and feel they are juts used to collect money. You get tickets where previously a policeman might just have warned you.
If its daytime you won't see the camera flash on the speeding camera (called gatso here) the first you know about it is when the ticket comes in the post.

>There would be screaming here if people were given speeding tickets based on elapsed time cameras, without being pulled over by a human being.

>>Usually 10% plus 2 mph over here is the cut off for prosecution. Average speeding (ie not dangerous driving) gets you three points on your license . If you get 12 points (so 4 speeding tickets) you get banned from driving for 6 months to one year. Also we have elapsed time cameras that record your entry time into an area and your exit time then work out your average speed. If its over the limit you get a ticket. These are often used on motorways where roadworks are going on and there is a temporary limit.

>>My brother in law was over from Germany the other day and couldn't believe how slowly I drove on the motorway. (70 mph)

>>>The traffic is typically at exactly 5 miles over the speed limit around here. I think everyone knows that you won't get stopped here for driving at that speed so it is what everyone does. Sometimes in the afernoon there will be a few going over that, but we have so many unmarked cars in this area that there is always one or two pulled over that you pass. What is tricky now is NC has a law that you MUST pull over to the left lane when you pass a cop which is on the side of the road and if there is not a left lane then you you have to slow wayyyyyyyyy down. Traffic will jam up really quickly in those spots!

I got a bunch of speeding tickets while in my 20s and driving nothing but sports cars. Trans Am, Corvette, Corvette -- you do the math <g>. I haven't had a moving violation in 20 years. Getting boring, aren't I?

>>>>>I am a firm believer that the safest way to get there is to go the same speed as the rest of the flow. If traffic is moving along at 45mph - I go 45mph. If traffic is moving along at 80, I go 80 :o)

It is such a breeze. 30 minutes to work, but that's because I have to get off I-85 after just 10-25 minutes and drive through town. Now, I could take I-40 to get there too, but I-40 here is a nightmare!!!
