There was no firm statement from MS on this. A lot of people took it the way you did (correctly so, as we now know) and thought that it meant no VFP10, but no such announcement was actually made until yesterday. So you are right, this is not really news for those who read between the lines, but last night's announcement was the frist firm statement on the issue.
Also, part of the news is that Sedna is not going to be in a service pack. Instead, it will be given away "as is" on CodePlex and not as part of VFP. SP2 will not have any Sedna components, and only cointain fixes (mostly for Vista). So this really is new.
