They busiest freeway in North America is Highway 401 through Toronto. Here is a quote from the history of the highway:

Today, Highway 401 also has the dubious honour of being the busiest freeway in North America, with traffic volumes surpassing the Santa Monica Freeway in California. At times traffic peaks around 400,000 vehicles a day between Keele Street and Islington Avenue in the west end of Toronto. And the 401 bridges over Hogg's Hollow (now being widened) carry more traffic each day than the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson.

You can read the whole story here. This was written in 2004, but in fact, while numbers have increased everywhere, the 401 is still the busiest freeway in North America today.

>You are probably right. I drove for awhile in LA back in 1989 and it was a mess. I'm sure it is 10 times worse now. My sister lives out there and I refuse to even visit that state if I can help it. (Of course I was in Monterey during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 which changed my views on CA). I think Houston and Atlanta come close to terrible traffic though!

>>>>>>In California a one hour commute is not unusual. In fact you can spend that much time to go 7 miles during rush hour. :)

>>>I love the recreation California has to offer, but man it's rush hour 18 hours a day, including weekends. Ever tried to leave town towards the 15 on 10 on a weekend? Fur-git-a-bot-it!
>>
>>The 15 isn't a problem from here, but we start by going AWAY from LA. <g>
>>
>>I take the 23 up to 118 through Simi Valley, join the 210 and get to 15 on the north side of San Bernardino. Traffic is still heavy, but nothing like the 101/404 corridor or anything y'all face down in the mix.
>>
>>I just couldn't do that. I've lived in the DC area, the NYC area, and Chicago. I've seen traffic. Nothing holds a candle to LA.
