An application timer updates the refresh time and as long as the refresh time is not too 'old' (system defineable) then the user is considered logged in. If they log out, their login is removed, but if they do an abnormal shutdown they may still be in the table (but their refresh time will not have been updated). It is best for users to log out, but if they don't you need a method to deal with that situation. The same might apply if a network connection went down.

If the user exits the app cleanly then a flag setting will work fine. But if there is ever an abnormal turmination, then the flag alone will not tell you if a user is still in the system. This is why I think a timer is necessary to update the 'connection' information.
