Well, I am no legal expert myself, but as far as I recall, the problem was that Microsoft gave away benefits to the MVPs for basically providing free support. So I guess this was similar to an employment relationship but without salary or other benefits such as health insurance and vacation. So I guess at some point some MS lawyer got cold feet and said "what if all those MVPs sue us for benefits?".

Something along those lines. Maybe someone else recalls more details.

I have no idea how they resolved it behind the scenes.
