I'll just do it for money ;)
a) There are many customers that want to have linux and I can't offer that option because VFP only runs in windows.
b) When a customer wants to buy my application they have to spend a fair amount od dollars to buy windows, Office an SQL server. If I can offer them a Free Software Only alternative ( with 0 dollars of associated cost) I can price my linux version about 1-2k dollars more and they will be happy to pay the difference.

If we are going to change of technology I prefer JAVA, it is easy to migrate, scalable, possibly of being in smarthphone, celular, Internet, desktop, multiplatform, flaxible and lasting, and the most important independency and stronger.
