I have now heard a similar statement (develoeprs saying they are going to a non-Microsoft platform because of Microsoft's decission) multiple times. Personally, I think this is silly.
You should choose a development platform that fits your needs. A platform that you can learn as quickly as possible and that you can be as productive with as possible.
Choosing a platform just to "rub it into Microsoft's face" is silly. After all, Microsoft will probably not even notice, and in the end, you end up with a sub-optimal platform.
That doesn't mean that Java isn't good. It is probably a great platform. But personally, I have chosen .NET. It is probably the most common dev environment today. Speaking from experience, it is very powerful and productive. All the new technologies are coming out for .NET. (No WPF on Java for instance). And, perhaps most importantly, the overall .NET model is somewhat similar to VFP, so it is probably the best case scenario for you interms of learning curve. (This also goes for SQL Server).
So those are some of the points I would consider. Not whether I can piss of Microsoft one way or another...
