The usual response from non-VFP MVPs last week when I talked about this issue was "Why would I need that feature? Don't we have virtual memory in the OS anyway?" Sure, let's depend completely on the OS to manage app performance with large sets of data...Certainly virtual memory has been no match for VFP's spanning. But who knows... maybe newer versions of OS and development tools will be smarter together.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
