If you allow me to add an option, even while it is not a mainstream Microsoft product, I would say that IronPython, which is released as Open Source, can be VERY appealing to VFP people, too. And it have planned support for LINQ, too.
http://www.codeplex.com/IronPythonIndeed, even if you pick VB or C#, wouldn't you want a full command window like VFP one, where you can instantiate anything and play around? As any other Python implementation, this one has it there. The full Class Library at your fingertips!
