Well I've been reading some stuff that has a totally different take on post WWII. As you know, we entered the Cold War almost immediately after WWII. Japan was setup with a substantial amount of help from the US for the prime reason of having an Asian country that could be pointed to as an example of a successful economy that occurred by following democratic examples. Basically to help fight communism.

An extreme amount of favortism was shown towards Japan. In many cases, we tossed them bones in trade for allowing us to keep military bases there. In many cases that meant allowing for Japan free access to the US markets. While our companies were frozen out of selling into Japan.

This makes a lot of sense to me in the bigger picture too. I remember watching a documentary on the TV industry maybe 10 yrs ago. By that time the only US manufacturer was Zenith, I think. The documentary described how it would cost significantly more to by a Mitsubshi tv in Japan then to buy the same set in USA. But they were able to evade an charges of dumping. This is just one example of the favoritism show to Japan.

In other words, I think there's a lot more to the economic rise of Japan then what you currently think.
