This rule is one of the pillars of freedom and good government. In the USA the religious right wing is having, what I think is a negative effect on elections and subsequently politics and of course, in the middle east, religion in politics is out of control in many areas.

And history refutes your hope. People who are pacifists, who refuse to fight for their freedom, soon lose it. We are not a free country because others want us to be. We are a free country, paid for by the blood of the good men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I don't think the government needs to tell us what the official religion is, but I think part of the problem with our country today is the fact that people have tried to remove God from government. Our country was founded on Judeo-Christian values and even athiests want all the "in God we trust" they can get their hands on. All the courts open with a prayer, as do both houses of congress. There is a big difference in the government dictating how we worship, and allowing us to freely express our beliefs.
