>Take a look at that www.etecnologia.net company that is creating a VFP NET compiler. They provide dbf access using a separate mechanism that (amongst other things) allows more than 255 fields per table and dbfs of more than 2Gb. By the time Office2007 is rewritten as a 64-bit app, there will be plenty of 64-bit options to keep using dbfs or transfer them to a different store if that makes sense. Actually the way things are going, people might decide it is better to use one of the other free backends that offer better scalability and security.

I think you might have read something in my last post that wasn't there. If I read Markus' post(s) correctly, he's saying a 64-bit non-VFP app running on Vista is unable to access VFP data, which was news to me.

I prefer to dig into this sort of issue before I encounter it in "real life" - I prefer foreseen to unforeseen snags ;) While this situation is likely to be rare now, it's likely to grow over time.

For example, IIRC Markus said 32-bit SQL Server won't (currently) install/run on Vista, so he's running 64-bit SQL Server. It sounds like it may be difficult or impossible for SQL64 to import VFP data. It might be possible to use VFP to push data to SQL64, but I'm not sure and that's another thing I'd like to know more about.

I think etecnologia qualifies as "bleeding-edge" right now. For serious development I'm not a bleeding edge sort of guy; I spend too much time cleaning up my own bugs without having to find or workaround other people's. As for other backend options, pretty much all VFP developers should already be familiar with them; the reasons for that have little to do with 64-bit or Vista.
