>I'm not sure which version of Fox your using but I had an app that updated a 2.5 Million record file using FoxPro 2.0 and it did the same thing. The index calculation needs a scrach pad to keep track of what's going on until it completes the creation of the index.

Because at this stage (over 3 million records) it's quicker to do it this way. If it grows much larger then I shall try your suggestion.
