Einar,

I completely agree with you, one can only learn .NET (the basics like accessing data, ...) if he uses the pure .NET framework.
BUT if anyone would have to begin with the basics, mostly everybody would have to do this in his spare time because no company would be willing to pay all this time.

When using a framework you can get results (very) fast and sometimes in an easier way.
