Making broad general statements about a small European country is risky at best. Making broad general statements about the 50 republics that are the United States makes as much sense as making those same kinds of statements about the European Union.

What most foreigners and even many US citizens fail to realize is that the uniied homogenious United States country with provences amusingly called States does not exist and never has.

The 50 republics, the 50 soverin states of the Union have 50 legislatures, 50 governors who do not report to the national governmet, 50 National Guards that are tied to the US military but separate enough that some of the States are not allowing their National Guards to go to Iraq!

These 50 republics have radically differing laws. Some do not allow capital punishment. Some allow carrying weapons with no restrictions other than the federal restrictions on bombs and machine guns. Many have various weapons permit laws. Corporate law varies considerably from State to State. (We call corporations formed in one State that operate in another State "foreign corporations!" My company is a Delaware corporation and operates in Florida as a registered "foreign corporation". It is taxed differently than Florida corporations and lawsuites are different. (It provides us some better protection against frivilous lawsuits.)

And morality varies significantly in what is acceptable from State to State as well. We have one (and only one) State in the Union that allows legal prostitution, for example. The majority of the states prohibit gambling. Some parts of some States prohibit the sale of alcohol. In some states divorce is much harder to do than in others. Marriage laws and practices vary considerably and so on.

But, we all like to simplify and say things like "oh Asians are all like so and so." NOT!
