THe underlined x means that once you've opened the File menu, you can press x to Exit. Underline on the drop down menu, as opposed to the menu bar, does not indicate an Alt command. The hot keys on the drop down are listed after the meny item. For example, look at the Edit menu and you'll see the P in Paste is underlined, but the hot key is Ctrl+V.
