>>>>>I don't hate him. It's just the reality. He is a very good athlete, probably not much of a student. Most follow that pattern. As for teenage knuckeheads, I tell my kids their lights won't really come on until they reach 30. That seems to be the "magic" age. The lights grow brighter as you get to it. Then there is that ever growing group whose lights never turn completely on . . . .

In the big revenue programs (men's basketball and football) they make a fortune with relatively little outlay. I read that Greg Oden is pulling down 12 credit hours for Varsity Basketball, Sociology 101, and Basket Weaving or some such. And the obscenely capitalistic Ohio State athletic department makes a fortune. (THE Ohio State University). It's a farce.

>>>This is my point. They should just pay these kids to play, because they really don't have the mental ability to compete in the classroom (for the most part). I walked into an English class at Memphis State and saw several cheerleaders, basketball players, football players, baseball players, pom-pom girls and I remember thinking "YES" no studying here! I was right. The instructor was a kind, but senile old guy. He had us read Romeo and Juliet every day in class and there were no tests. I sure learned a lot in that class. What were those two families names? Capulet, Montazuma, er Piscopo?

>>Years ago, a friend of mine was given a basketball scholarship to [I think it was] Tampa. He came home after a couple of months because he wanted an education and apparently that wasn't part of the deal.

>I don't know about that. If you WANT and education, you don't have to enroll in the basket-weaving courses. Most just aren't college material, as it relates to higher education. That's ok though, not everyone is cut out for college, in spite of what many people seem to think. I like what Bear Bryant said about the disparity of his salary and the math professors. He said something like, "when they can fill a 100,000 seat stadium with paying customers, they will get a raise"

He did want an education, but he couldn't get any time to do it. He came back, paid his own way, and now he's a lawyer. I know, I know...
