It can be but isn't usually - as far as I know. It depends on what type of diabetes - most older people who become diabetic are the non-hereditary type (Type 2) - in a way they are luckier because they don't always have to inject insulin; then again it can be harder to control.
Type 1 is usually hereditary though.
