I have to make sure I get my eyes and feet checked at least once a year and I make up for not being allowed to donate blood by having it withdrawn for tests almost everytime I see a doctor. Managing your blood sugar via sub-cutaneous insulin injectiosn makes it very difficult to lose weight as well.

My dad is a diabetic. (As was his mother, so I have more than a passing interest). He has had major problems with his eyes, kidneys, and heart. His doctor recently told him he should expect to start dialysis within a year or two.
