>> You are wise to be careful about it. As I'm sure you know, diabetes can screw up your body in lots of ways.

I have to make sure I get my eyes and feet checked at least once a year and I make up for not being allowed to donate blood by having it withdrawn for tests almost everytime I see a doctor. Managing your blood sugar via sub-cutaneous insulin injectiosn makes it very difficult to lose weight as well.
Guy I work with has type 1. He is extremely careful about his eating habits - not only what he eats, but when. He is very regimented. He also has to inject every day - I'm not sure how often but it seems like maybe twice a day during working hours. He also works out every day for about 45 minutes, and he is in very good shape. He's in his late 50s. He was one who was diagnosed later than normal.
My best friend has type 2, and she was diagnosed around her 50th birthday. My grandmother (enate) had type 1, but so far my mother, my siblings and I have all been spared.
