That was my arrangement previously to this house and I also had the same problem with finding things. No cats though just an old carwash dog. :)

I think that helped my case with my sweet and beautiful wife when I said I would keep all my books upstairs in one place. The only change we made was to add another bookcase downstairs in our bedroom so that we could keep our current reading stack handy.
