He had waited till the last minute and as the night went on he became more and more frustrated. I was puzzled as I knew it only needed to be a couple of pages. It turned out that he was trying to write the paper perfectly the very first time. I explained to him about writing it and then revising it. He exclaimed that he had never thought of that.

I am surprised no teacher had suggested writing and revising before middle school. That is definitely the way to go, especially now that word processors make it so easy. Back when writing was done longhand or on a typewriter (dating myself -- I remember typewriters!) you maybe had to think about it a little, but now it's an easy decision.

We are in complete agreement about banging out the first draft with some speed, then coming back through to clean it up. It's much more productive that way. If you try to get every word exactly right the first time you may forget where you were going.
