He will never top "Layla" IMO. And neither will many others. Everything just came together on that album. EC and Duane Allman spurred each other on to guitar virtuosity that is unmatched in rock history IMO. I never get tired of listening to it. In fact it's in the car glove compartment now.
There is a great anecdote about the first time Clapton and Allman met. Duane was really young at the time (he never got much older than young, sadly) and was playing a gig somewhere in the UK. In mid solo he turned toward the back of the stage and saw Eric sitting there with his back against the wall. Can you imagine that, being an up and coming guitarist and realizing Eric Clapton had come to watch you play? It's amazing Duane didn't drop his guitar on the stage.
