It wasn't strategic for years. It never made a lot of money for them, compared to their strategic products like VB, NET, SQL Server.
It kept going because of the installed base and the community. But even that had to come to an end at some poitn. It was known and expected for some time. It should come as no surprise to anyone. Thatdoes moean you must learn other languages and jump. It is alweays good to learn other languages/tools, but nobody's pushing you, other than the market.
