I think the problem we where experiencing was in SQL 2005 rather than the CR as it was retrieving data in general which was slow, but not all CR's or procedures were affected.

I agree with pushing the dataset into the report rather than using CR execute the SP, and any new reports we develop work in this way. We have been looking to upgrade the version of CR, or possibly using Reporting Services in 2005 but we havent had a chance to have a good look at this yet.
