If your example project is checked into VSS, then you will get a prompt asking to check it out, and you can catch the mistake at that point instead of catching it a half hour later. You can kind of simulate VSS by setting all the files in a project to read only. VS will warn you if you make changes to a read only file (as you if you want to make it writable).
