>Of course some of the early recording devices were pretty primitive. Think of the famous "Ink on Paper" method used since at least the 8th century. Of course the playback mechanisms were also pretty primitive. Depending on the complexity of the music, several devices were needed to accurately reproduce the music with the correct frequency and tonality. A technician was required to operate each device with a master technician to co-ordinate the activity. Sound reproduction quality was pretty spotty and varied widely depending upon the quality of the devices, technicians and the management style of the co-ordinator.
