The path would be better than Reagan's amnesty program. We have to solve the immigration problem period. I see the fence more of an issue for homeland security though than for immigration. Right now any terrorist can walk across our border(s).

>Maybe we are not in complete disagreement after all. I don't think anyone should be against a guest worker program (especially for those who are already here working). Well, maybe the hard core who want to build walls and not let a soul in, or illegals who really are trying to abuse the system.

>Here is the 64K question: should there be a path to citizenship from a guest worker visa? After some reasonable period of time (5 years?), paying taxes, no criminal record, you are eligible for citizenship?

>>I agree. I think the guest worker visas would help with that.

>>>We are in complete agreement there. If illegal immigrants were given the option of paying taxes and being treated as more or less equal citizens I think most of them would. They avoid the government because they are afraid of deportation.

>>>>There is absolutely nothing wrong with the protests. Kudos to them for carrying it off. The problem is what they were protesting for.. I disagree with it. I have no problem with anyone wanting to come live in this country. The problem I have is that some get a free pass and get more benefits than I do. If, as you say, jobs 'off the record' or with 'illegal stolen identities' were not available to them, then a large percentage of it would end. I'm all for guest visas. Make sure everyone who comes here pays for what I pay for - especially TAXES under their REAL identity and NOT MINE.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

>>>>>>> Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors; I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
>>>>>>>

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my right to be there.
>>>>>>>

I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being an anti-housebreaker. Oh yeah, and I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me.
