My trick was to use the clipboard. See message #1015959, or better the whole thread.

As for the niceties, I've found it was the simplest (not my invention, but I really liked it) to have a preformatted excel sheet with named ranges, and store the values into those ranges, then just SaveAs() wherever I want it.
