It's a two step process:
1- Run SQL Server Backup to get the data
2- Run standard backup software to get data to tape
You could backup directly to tape using SQL Server backup, but you still need to somehow backup the rest of the files on the disk, so again, two step process.
With backup software that has a SQL Server agent, the backup software does it all in one step.
