It does let me add characters back if I delete a few.

As to the grid, I noticed that if I marked something readonly on the grid, it marked it readonly on the dataset, not just for the grid cell. That made me think that there might be some formatting on the grid that was also affecting the format on the text boxes. I tried tinkering with the autosize mode, which did occasionally change the way the text box worked. Sometimes it would let me add one or two characters past the end, other times, none. That led me to try varying the minimum width and the width properties on the grid, but that didn't help.
