As a "type 1" diabetic I am all for research into a long term or permanent cure for my condition. This particular "cure" makes use of the patient's own stem cells and so avoids the ethical morass that accompanies other stem cell sources.

My problem with this "cure" is that it seems to effectively "reboot" a patient's immune system. I have no doubt that my own condition was brought on by my immune system destroying my own islet cells but the thought of having my immune system switched off for any length of time is quite frightening.

Our immune systems are all that stand between us and maladies ranging from a sore throat to full blown cancer! When the immune system is inactive we become vulnerable to any and all diseases. I know this cure involves the restarting of the immune system but how many times have you gone to reboot a key system only to find it doesn't start up again? (Melodramatic I know but just a thought).
