My take (translation: I have no hard numbers ;-) ) is that most of those who have posted are leaning toward .NET, but more than a few said they are considering, or would like, an open source option. And not all of them just because they're angry at Microsoft. YAG was very firm and direct that MS will never turn VFP over to an open source effort.

The open source effort should be at creating a native file-based database engine in the form of class libraries for Java and the CLI, and maybe Ruby, and whatever else is a viable platform for the next decade.

While VFP can be used as a model to those ends, I never suggested that VFP's code could be ported or used in the project.

Microsoft might be "firm and direct" that VFP source code lies as it does.

But they really have no ability to stop someone from making another dBase clone.

Unless they're able to purchase it...

... but lately Google's been beating them to all the punches.
