You are putting the result of ADIR() into a different named array than the one you use to retrieve.
SET DEFAULT TO d:\vfpview
nTablesCount = ADIR(aTables, 'DBF')
CLEAR
FOR nCount = 1 TO nTablesCount
   ? aTables(nTablesCount,1)
ENDFOR
