Like Mike, I'm not opposed to abstinence for teens. In fact, I think we made it pretty clear to our boys that that was what we expected from them at that age. However, I also think we need to educate them more generally. A good sex education program teaches abstinence as a viable option, but also teaches about other methods of protecting oneself from pregnancy and STDs. After all, we don't expect them to be abstinent for life, right, so how about teaching them what they need to know?

As an amusing side note, my freshman orientation at Penn (in 1974) included distribution of a book titled "Sex is never an emergency!"
