Me, too. He really was one of a kind.
Here's another good one, turned to at random in "The Best of Mike Royko". It's a column called "The Kids Tell It Like It Is" that he wrote on 1/16/70 about Martin Luther King. That was long before MLK's birthday became a holiday. Royko was way out in front on that one. What interests me most is that he came from Eastern European stock and was undoubtedly familiar with the N word. It isn't a fawning column -- he didn't have that in him -- but it was an MLK tribute before they became fashionable. One troublemaker paying tribute to another.
I'm not going to type this one in. Just buy the book! Some things are worth rereading.
