The rule around my house is simple and both cats learned it VERY young.

Bother me when I'm sleeping and kitty flies. It works quite well.

They have a thing they do when I've been away for a couple of days, too. When I first get home they do the typical ankle-8's at the door to let me know they're glad I'm home but as soon as I sit down somewhere, they'll sit down stock-still *just* out of arm reach with their backs to me.

They just want to make sure I know how they feel about my being absent for a bit.
