Basically, yes.

It can get quite complicated. The medical office will typically send 837 transactions to a 'clearinghouse'. The clearinghouse will then route transactions to payers (insurance companies) or other clearinghouses. The first clearinghouse may try to validate information in the transactions and may reject transactions based on their validation.

I work for a clearinghouse and deal with the HIPAA EDI transactions all the time. feel free to ask any questions.
