Yes, but the files are still there, just the references have been removed. At least as long as I don't write anything to the hard drive in the meantime. I found a couple utilities, but they could not locate by directories, only files, and I didn't see files that I thought belonged in the deleted directory. Must be a utility somewhere that works on directories...
