Tom, I don't think there's any organised MS "plan". The timing of the announcement was highly unfortunate at the current state of affairs: VFP people who try to look at dLinq know as much as if not more than NET familiars, and it's got plenty of evolving to do yet.
If it's at all possible to stay in VFP, IMHO that's the answer for now, even though competitive and customer risk has been created by the announcement. If people feel forced to move to NET, typed datasets seem the way to go WITH change tracking, though you might be inclined to start over once dLinq is a bit more complete.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
