We lived in Hayward California about 30 years ago, in a very nice neighborhood. Suddenly the neighborhood began experiencing burglaries by a group of individuals. January of 1978 we were victims of burglars, so we decided to sell our home. I painted the inside and outside of the house and twenty eight days later the burglars returned. We were not home either time.

Upon the second visit the burglars vandalized our home by leaving foot prints from their shoes on the newly painted walls, broke the windows, and “removed personal property without the owners permission” (police report language meaning they stole things).

On the first visitation of these fine fellows, they took all my guns, and about $30,000 in property. After the second visit I asked one of the police man who came to our house to take the police report , “What would happen if we were home and these guys broke into our home and I shot them”? The reply was, “You would be arrested, but if your wife shot them it would be alright”! I am 6’ 7” and my wife is 5’ 2”.

We sold the house and have not returned to Hayward. We were audited by the IRS for that year due to the burglary. If that does not add insult to injury then I do not know what does.

I had to produce original copies of receipts to my insurance company for everything stolen. In return you receive a percentage (very small) based upon many factors such as but not limited to when an item was purchased. The IRS required I bring them the same receipts to be sure that we were not paid too much for our losses.

The moral of the story: "Never be a victim"!

>Why is it that with the plethora of guns in the U.S., criminals don't simply assume beforehand that the house they are about to break into has at least one gun?

>>Your opinion and experience certainly differ from mine. I am curious, how many criminals have you known who feel the same way you do? How many would target a home when they knew in advance the owner had a weapon there?

>>>Hi Tracy
>>>
>>>we certainly have more gun crime than before Dunblane but the implication that banning handguns contributed is nonsense.
>>>
>>>Some people seem to think that having guns deters gun crime. Is the US an example of that deterrence ? Would a criminal think "hey I won't steal from that house or mug that person because they might have a gun" I would have thought they are more likely to think "hey they might have a gun I'll take mine just in case and if they have I'll shoot them."
