Well actually this laptop ran like this from time of delivery, without tweaking iow. It just runs without cpu or disk activity if its idle. I think it might be (a) that it was a clean install, and (b) that the equipment is sufficient for the Vista, enough memory, fast enough cpu, etc. The indexing service I switched off only today because we just don't need that.
