Somehow, when I posted the original message, I lost about 2/3rds of the message. I have a sql statement to pull the information, but my goal was more of a general utility to merge multiple tables into one table. Your ideas was actually the way I was going then it dawned on me that perhaps someone else has already done some utility to merge tables into one and avoid null values for fields that didn't exist in the other tables.
