I can only believe you. Back in the 80s all I was using was a C-64. The needle printer for it used CHR(27) esc sequences. Then end of 80s, begin of 90s with an Atari ST I had a Nec Pinwriter P60 and it too needed CHR(27), so that's my experience with programming "printer drivers".
