I think in the written text it's harder to recognize when you're just making a joke or kidding and I prefer to put it rather than offend. It also, in my opinion, makes all the statements a little bit less weighted, so I can hide my ignorance of certain subjects by using a smile (a shy one).
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
